The Great Lakes Basin is more than a body of water—it’s a living system. A protector. A provider. And a part of who we are.

It gives over 40 million people in the U.S. and Canada their drinking water. It sustains entire ecosystems, shapes regional economies, and roots generations of people in a deep connection to land and water.

But right now, that balance is under threat.

Through environmental education, water justice organizing, Indigenous-led protection efforts, and direct community action, our Great Lakes Basin Initiative is working to defend the water that defends us.

We are not a political lobbying organization. As a nonprofit, we do not advocate for specific legislation. But we can and do advocate for ideas—ideas rooted in justice, sustainability, and our shared responsibility to protect the sacred.

One of the most powerful ideas gaining momentum around the world is the Rights of

Nature: a movement that reimagines the relationship between humans and the natural world. At its core, it recognizes ecosystems as living entities with inherent rights to exist, regenerate, and thrive.

We support the public education, community engagement, and storytelling that help people understand and uplift this shift in thinking—especially here in the Great Lakes Basin.

When you donate to this work, you help us:

  • Host water protection trainings and local cleanups

  • Support Indigenous stewardship and treaty-based water defense

  • Resist corporate water extraction and pollution

  • Amplify frontline communities most impacted by environmental harm

  • Educate the public on water justice and the global Rights of Nature movement

We believe in building a world where the water is not just a resource to be used, but a life-force to be protected.

This isn’t about charity.

It’s about responsibility.
It’s about standing up for the water that stands up for us.
